Bits of Serena

Here's another dump of Serena stories that have piled up over the last few weeks without internet!  Kuddos to you if you make it all the way through, as I'm sure this post will be a long one!  ;)

At supper the other night, Jordan was teasing Serena by swiping her sippy cup whenever she wasn't looking.  We always get such a kick out of her reaction whenever he does something like this.  I mean, how can she still have that kind of genuine surprise written all of her face when this joke has been played on her so many times?!  I finally asked her where her drink went.  She said, "I don't know!  It keep missing appear!"  I'm pretty sure that was her attempt at the word "disappear."  ;)

The other day, Bret was being kinda fussy while Serena was on the potty.  I was holding him and shushing him when Serena came up with this reassuring comment, "It's okay, Bet!  You get bigger and you can go potty too!"  Oh yes, that makes everything so much better!

Serena has suddenly latched onto the idea of being a 'big girl' and it is something that she really wants to be.  The other day, Jordan was getting a hug from her after he got back from work, and made some remark about how she was his little girl.  She was quiet for a moment, as though confused, and then said, "This is a BIG girl right here!"

One thing we have done since Bret's birth in an attempt to discourage sibling rivalry is to talk often about how we used to do the same things with Serena that she now sees us doing with Bret.  Just recently, she's started to bring it up all on her own.  "When I was a baby, you (fill in the blank)?"  It's pretty sweet, and I really do enjoy talking to her about when she was a baby!

Usually when Serena needs to go to the bathroom, she announces it with the phrase, "I need to go pooooootty!"  But the other day, Jordan had just gotten back from work and said something to the affect of 'really needing' to use the bathroom.  An hour or so later, Serena said, "I need to go pooootty!"  And a second or two after that rephrased it as she hurried towards the bathroom, "I really need to use the baffroon!"

One of my favorite words that Serena says is "Smatch."  It's her version of "match" and I just hope it's a LONG time before she figures out the right way to say that word!  She also says "grink" for "drink" and "my's" instead of "mine."  She also often says the phrase, "Just like in the book?" when she's trying to understand something, which I think is pretty cute!  She just loves her books and pours over them every day!  She also picked up on the phrase, "Sometimes that happens" (I often say it to help her 'get over' something that might otherwise have upset her little perfectionistic world).  For example, "We can't call Grammie?  We can't see her?  Hmmm.  Sometimes that happens."

Serena has a huge imagination and often talks to inanimate objects.  I hope that's not too weird!  But, it's so cute!  It's not like she has whole conversations with them, but just says things like, "No, shoes!  Go on my foot!" or "Bye, bunny rabbits!  See you later, okay?  Okay, bunny rabbits?" Or like the other day at the park, "No wind!  Don't blow my bib!  Okay, wind?!"  This imagination can keep her occupied in the dark for an hour or two if she gets put to bed in a not-tired-enough mood.  We'll hear her singing and talking and apparently playing out all sorts of scenarios with her 'friends' (stuffed animals).  It's pretty entertaining!  I recently switched out the kids' toys and pulled out our little collection of "Little People" toys for the first time in 6 or 7 months.  The difference in how she plays with them now as compared to then is amazing!  Then, it was more about figuring out what everything could do (ie, open, close, make sounds, etc.). Now, she is playing with the people...they're going to sleepy, waking up, making breakfast, driving to Aldi and Walmart, etc.  It's great!
